Calverley United U-8s were knocked out of the Wiggington junior tournament in the cruellest of fashions.
The ghoulish spectre of a penalty shoot-out defeat was left to haunt Calverley United Under-8s as their hopes of landing a prestigious tournament win ended at the quarter-final stage.

This time it was Scarborough side Phoenix playing the role of the Germans in despatching Calverley in ruthless fashion from the spot after United had dominated the game in normal time but being unable to make the crucial breakthrough.

The shoot-out ended 4-1 in Phoenix's favour after it was moved from the match surface to a neighbouring pitch because of a large hole where the penalty spot should have been.

There was little goalkeeper Matthew Hodges could do about any of a sequence of clinical penalties and with only Danny Taylor of Calverley's first three penalty takers able to score, a long day ended in disappointment.

The squad though left York with their heads held high after reaching the last eight of the 24-team tournament, carving out three wins from their five group matches.

The five minutes each way format meant goals were at a premium and Taylor's early strike from a long throw by Harris Thompson proved decisive in an opening 1-0 win over Richmond Town.

Thompson himself put away a penalty for hand ball against the Wiggington Grasshoppers to claim another 1-0 win after Calverley had been held by Nunthorpe Juniors despite Lewis Waddington rattling the inside of a post after a slick one-two with Louis Squires.

Striker Owen Bailey, who had been carried off after a collision against Wiggington, recovered to score a superb long-range goal in the opening seconds against Cramlington which, thanks to a stunning late save by Hodges, was enough to gain another 1-0 victory.

Calverley's rock-solid defence, marshalled well by Chris Brown, was breached for the first time in the final group game but the earlier results rendered a 2-0 defeat to Thirsk Athletic irrelevant.

Runners-up spot brought the fateful quarter-final against Phoenix in which Calverley produced their best football of the day, stretching the Seasiders to breaking point. The clear chance they craved never came however and their adventure ended in purgatory by penalties.

Calverley United U-8s squad: Matthew Hodges, Harry Davis, Chris Brown, Harris Thompson, Danny Taylor, Lewis Waddington, Louis Squires, Tommy Chambers, Owen Bailey, Ben Store.
