Rambo style knife found on Chapel Allerton man who crashed car while fleeing attack in Roundhay

Members of the public found the knife on Jermaine Thompson while holding him down and detaining him after he crashed his Fiat Punto into a parked car on Larkhill Walk in Roundhay, Leeds Crown Court heard.

The court was told a group of around seven men had been attacking Thompson's car and he was fleeing from them when the collision happened just after 6pm on January 21.

Nick Adlington, prosecuting, said the men ran to where the crash happened.

The court heard Thompson, 25, drove backwards and forwards to try and free his car and escape.

Mr Adlington said Thompson was removed from the car and was being restrained on the floor when someone said "he's got a knife."

The court heard a member of the public had called 999 and police and paramedics arrived at the scene.

Thompson, of Town Street Walk, Chapel Allerton, had a Rambo style hunting knife in a scabbard.

And police found a small amount of cannabis in a bag Thompson had with him.

Mr Adlington said: "He said he had been chased and beaten up by some people and he was very scared."

Thompson admitted having a bladed article in a public place, possessing cannabis, driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence and driving with no insurance.

He committed the offences whilst out of prison on licence after being released in May 2018 from a six year sentence for wounding with intent.

Ian Howard, mitigating, said: "Mr Thompson was himself the victim of a quite protracted attack by a large group of men who had weapons with them."

Mr Howard added: "When the vehicle was attacked by six or seven men wielding weapons, the knife wasn't produced.

"Mr Thompson tried to get away from his assailants by driving the car away.

"His difficulties arose from his use of cannabis and his choice of supplier."

Recorder Dapinder Singh jailed Thompson for 18 months.
