Calverley's Victoria Park was the venue for the launch of a new competition calling on youngsters to grow the tallest sunflower.
Van Gogh got there first, but Leeds Lord Mayor Elect Frank Robinson thought he would do his own painting of sunflowers.
Coun Robinson (Con, Calverley and Farsley) was launching a competition which is part of Leeds in Bloom 2008.
The aim is to grow the tallest sunflower in the city. Entrants will get a free grow pot containing seeds, compost and growing instructions.
Coun Robinson was also promoting a competition to design a poster. Youngsters aged four to 14 can choose from four themes – Leeds Parks 2008, Blooming Wild, Living in Leeds and What A Colourful City.
The winning designs will be printed as posters and used to promote Leeds in Bloom in the coming year.
Prizes will be awarded at a ceremony later in the year. Monday, June 2, is the closing date for this competition.
Coun Robinson, who is chairman of Leeds Floral Initiative, said: "Come on, let's see what you can do. Get colouring, painting, drawing, use a pen, pencil, brush or even fingers to produce your poster.
"And if you don't like designing, why not try to grow the tallest sunflower?"
Competitors should submit a photograph of their sunflower with the measurements shown. The tallest will then be visited by a judge who will confirm the height. Closing date for this is September 15.
