Calverley's Rosanna Binns has always stood out from the crowd, but her quirky style has now landed her the chance to realise a dream nurtured by millions of girls.
The 22-year-old hairdresser is hoping to win a contract with a leading catwalk agency when she is due to appear in the next series of the popular reality show, Britain's Next Top Model.

Rosanna is set to compete in the first episode of the programme's sixth series in an attempt to progress through to the next round and pursue her ambition of becoming one of the nation's leading models.

She says her Mod-inspired style has helped her stand out from other aspiring models – but she was still shocked when she found out that she had won a place on the show.

Rosanna said: "I didn't quite believe it. I covered my mouth, got absolutely gobsmacked. I felt like I was going to cry, and I wasn't sure why. I'm not a particularly teary girly girl, but I could have just bawled.

"It felt like finally something really exciting was about to take off."

Her route to winning a place on the television reality series began after Rosanna was crowned the Face of Tigra 2009 at the Vauxhall Style modelling competition.

She saw an advertisement for the Vauxhall Style competition, in which the winner would be fast-tracked to the sixth series of the show, which is due to be broadcast on the Living cable channel next year.

Rosanna said: "I didn't think it would be a big deal, but we got there and it was huge. I didn't realise that the people from Britain's Next Top Model were actually going to be the judges!"

"It all just suddenly started getting bigger, and I actually sat talking to Lisa Snowdon, " she added.

She made it to the final round of eliminations, in which she had to strut down the catwalk in a black evening gown. "I did suddenly think, oh my God, I can't remember how to walk anymore, " she said.

Rosanna has maintained that the success came by being that little bit different.

She said: "Other girls were very commercial looking. I have kind of got that strange Mod-esque look. I was just obviously the one that stuck out as being stranger than the rest of the girls.

"They seemed to like the fact that I wasn't quite mainstream."

As well as a chance to be Britain's Next Top Model, Rosanna won a spot on the London Fashion Week catwalk this September. She also received a bag of goodies, including makeup by Benefit and Tony and Guy.

The first episode of the show will be the final round of auditions, before 12 chosen candidates move in together and the contest begins.

Rosanna's main concern is that her personality might not translate well to the screen.

She said: "I'm fairly sarcastic, which worries me, so I'm going to try to tone that down. I'll be my normal chirpy self so I hope they don't take that the wrong way. I think I'm funny but perhaps not everyone will!"

She admitted that she is nervous about entering the cut-throat world of reality television, and added: "Twelve girls living in a house together can be quite a scary place to be."

Britain's Next Top Model pits aspiring models against one another in a series of contests.

Usually, the judges eliminate one contestant at the end of each episode. Last season's winner was Alex Evans, and there are five contestants still in the running for season five.
