Calverley councillor Frank Robinson has won another gong before he even takes up his new office as Leeds's Lord Mayor-elect.
For after recently being awarded a Bevin Boy medal for wartime mining work, Coun Robinson is one of five Neighbourhood Watch Coordinators to be recognised for their service fighting crime with certificates from West Yorkshire Police.
Coun Robinson, who will be installed as the city's First Citizen on May 22, has been awarded a Long Service certificate after notching up 21 years with the Watch movement.
The four other Neighbourhood Watch coordinators to be recognised include Diane Shipman and Catherine Steele-Smith who also receive Long Service certificates and Andrew and Dierdre Simpson-Laing whose service is cited as "beyond the call of duty".
In March 1987 Coun Robinson was elected chairman at the inaugural meeting of the Sunnybank Neighbourhood Watch at Thornbury, near Pudsey. For years he ensured meetings were held and attended and produced and distributed its newsletter.
Coun Robinson has also served on Pudsey Crime Prevention Panel and also represented the North West Central Committee on the Pudsey Police Forum.
Diane Shipman was involved in Neighbourhood Watch in Pudsey from its late 1980s beginnings.
In the spring of 2002 Andrew and Dierdre Simpson-Laing and neighbours were victims of shed burglaries. In one incident Andrew gave chase and though unable to catch the thieves he recovered expensive gardening equipment.
The burglaries angered neighbours and Andrew, resulting in the setting up of the Newlands and Parkside Neighbourhood Watch Group in July 2002.
Catherine Steele-Smith has been involved in Neighbourhood Watch for over 10 years, having formed a group in her street. She joined the local Crime Prevention Panel. She is a founder member and current chair of the Yeadon and Rawdon Neighbourhood Watch.
