The father-of-two has been discharged from Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, but is undergoing further tests as an outpatient. He is expected to take weeks to recover.

It is believed a front tyre on his green Ford Mondeo Zetec may have blown before the car crashed into a pillar supporting a flyover bridge.
Mr Truswell said he remembers very little of the crash, which took place at around 10.55pm on May 26 between the Paragon Business Village and Junction 41 of the M1.

"I was travelling along, felt a bit of a bump and then I was sitting in the car, surrounded by passers-by who had very kindly stopped to help."

He said the exact cause of the crash remains unclear, but added: "From a passer-by who contacted my wife, it looked as if I had a front wheel blowout. In the pictures of the car that I have seen, the front tyre is flat."

Mr Truswell, who was elected in 1997, said he is suffering from severe bruising and seatbelt injuries and remains in a lot of pain.

He said he is lying in bed at home and trying not to move.

His office said no other vehicle was involved and there was nobody else in the car.

A spokeswoman said: "Mr Truswell suffered chest and abdominal injuries, and spent four days in hospital receiving treatment and undergoing tests to check for internal damage.

"He has now been discharged , but will undergo further tests as an outpatient. His recovery is expected to take some weeks."

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "The vehicle left the carriageway and was in collision with the pillar of a flyover bridge.
"The driver was treated for minor injuries and the vehicle had to be recovered due to the damage."

Mr Truswell was a Yorkshire Evening Post journalist for 11 years before becoming a Wakefield Council officer. He was a Leeds city councillor between 1982 and 1997.
