Calverley: Campaigners to fight plans for new children's home
Campaigners worried about a proposed new children's home and other major developments in their peaceful and 'unique' neighbourhood have held a meeting to fight the plans.
People in the Woodhall Park and Rockwood estates of Calverley are worried that a recent proposal to turn one house into a care home, and an application to extend another four-bedroom house into a 12-bed mansion, will lead to "open house" on commercial developments if they are pushed through.
Homeowners say such projects are totally inappropriate for the area and would represent a creeping commercialisation of a family friendly neighbourhood.
They now hope to set up a local residents' association and halt current and any future similar developments.
Local resident, Susan Raynor, said: "It's the fact that the 12-bed extension is huge in comparison to everything else on the estate.
"It's inappropriate for the area. The majority of people living here have been here for more than 20 years. We have lots of families and older people. It's very unique. All the houses are different."
A petition with at least 150 signatures will eventually be presented to Leeds City Council.
